In a little over 200 years this band of nomadic Mexicans rose from obscurity to become the most powerful group of people in Central America. Their rapid and violent downfall owed as much to their harsh treatment of  neighbouring tribes and  a religion which by any standards was cruel and blood thirsty, as it did to Cortez and the gold-hungry Spanish conquistadors.
